LTL freight class: how it sets the rate
November 8, 2026 · Portlandia Logistics dispatch
Most LTL reclass fees are not a carrier problem — they are a documentation problem that starts at booking. Freight class is derived from density, handling and liability under the NMFC system, and it sets the rate basis before the carrier ever touches the freight.
Class is a rate basis, not a label
A shipment described as class 70 and reweighed at class 92.5 is not a mystery: the dimensions or the weight, or both, were estimated rather than measured. Capture length, width, height and actual weight at booking, compute density, and compare it with the class on the BOL.
Where the documentation argument is won
If the commodity is ambiguous — stacked solar modules, crated switchgear, mixed pallets — say which documentation supports which class and put it on the rate confirmation. A terminal exception then becomes a conversation instead of a charge.
What we do at booking
We quote LTL from the lane, the class and the handling reality, and re-check class when the shipment is booked. It costs a few minutes at quote time and removes the most common line item that shippers dispute after delivery.
