Portlandia Rate IndexA rate index built from our own quote data
Most "freight market" pages republish somebody else's index. This one is narrower and more honest: it is computed from the quote requests this site has actually stored, with the sample size, window and basis printed on the page. It is a modeled planning index — not a market survey, not booked transactions.
Internal QA and verification submissions are excluded (10 excluded). The index updates automatically as new quotes are stored, so read the sample size before treating any number as a benchmark. Per-mode and per-lane figures are withheld below n=5. With a sample this small the figures below are directional only.
Sample summary
Basis: each quote's planning-range midpoint ÷ planning road miles. Ranges come from the published estimate model (mileage, weight, class, handling, 18% fuel), so this measures what we quote, not what the market books. Dates: Nov 8, 2026 to Nov 8, 2026.
Median estimate by equipment
| Equipment | n | Median | Note | P25 | P75 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LTL | 4 | withheld (n<5) | insufficient sample | withheld (n<5) | withheld (n<5) |
Figures are withheld below n = 5 for that mode or lane. Suppression is deliberate: a median of two quotes is not a benchmark.
State-pair lanes quoted
| Lane | n | Median | P25 – P75 |
|---|---|---|---|
| KY → GA | 4 | withheld (n<5) | withheld (n<5) |
State pairs, not city pairs — a KY→GA quote covers any Kentucky origin to any Georgia destination in the sample.
Monthly direction
| Month | n | Median |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-11 | 4 | withheld (n<5) |
Model reference (model output, not market rates)
For comparison only: what the published estimate model produces per mile at representative distances, assuming 2,000 lb / 2 pallets for LTL and 20,000 lb for truckload, class 70, no accessorials. This is model output, not a booked rate.
| Mode | 150 mi | 350 mi | 700 mi | 1200 mi | 1800 mi | 2400 mi |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LTL (2,000 lb, class 70) | $3.03/mi | $1.75/mi | $1.26/mi | $1.06/mi | $0.97/mi | $0.92/mi |
| FTL (dry van, 20,000 lb) | $4.53/mi | $2.78/mi | $2.77/mi | $2.77/mi | $2.77/mi | $2.77/mi |

No shipper names, companies or emails are published. Quote numbers are shown because they are the reference a shipper already has.
Basis, in one paragraph
The estimate model prices a lane from planning road miles × mode rate, plus weight/pallet handling, a freight-class factor, an 18% fuel surcharge and any selected accessorials. This index divides each quote's range midpoint by its planning miles. It is a model of our quoting behavior, not a survey of the spot market, and it does not include booked carrier costs or margin.
What this index is not
- Not a spot-market index or a third-party benchmark.
- Not booked transaction data — quotes may not convert.
- Not a rate guarantee; the rate confirmation is the binding number.
- Not seasonally adjusted or lane-weighted.
Why publish it at all
Because a rate page should show its sample. If the number is thin, the page says it is thin; if the basis changes, the basis is printed next to it.
The index is a reference. Your lane gets a number.
Submit the ZIPs, weight, class and handling for a planning range with the basis shown; dispatch confirms the firm rate in writing.
