Insurance & value-addedWhat is covered, what is verified, and what we will not claim
Freight insurance is the part of a quote where vague language costs the most. This page states exactly what is checked before dispatch, what the carrier is responsible for, and which Portlandia coverage documents are — and are not — on file.
This page does not publish a broker liability, contingent cargo or carrier cargo limit for Portlandia Logistics. No such certificate has been issued to the entity to date, so no dollar figure is shown. Ask dispatch for the current certificate before you tender; if we cannot produce it, do not tender the load.
Before every dispatch: carrier verification
The carrier's insurance is the coverage that responds first to a loss in transit. These checks happen before a load is tendered to a carrier, not after a claim.
- Active MC and USDOT authority — checked against the carrier's recorded authority before the first load and re-checked when authority or contact details change.
- Certificate of insurance collected — auto liability and cargo coverage, with the certificate holder named where the shipper's contract requires it.
- Cargo minimum on our onboarding checklist — $100,000 for general freight. Specialized freight (temperature-controlled, high-value, hazmat) needs a higher limit and is quoted only when the carrier's certificate supports it.
- Certificate expiry tracked — a lapsed certificate pauses new tenders until a current certificate is on file.
- Signed carrier agreement — indemnity, claim handling and insurance obligations are in the brokerage–carrier agreement, not in a phone call.
Carrier insurance documents are uploaded through the private carrier portal and stored privately — they are never published on this site.
What the shipper should know about their own coverage
Three different policies can respond to a freight loss, and only one of them is ours to verify:
| Policy | Who holds it | What it responds to | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carrier auto liability | The motor carrier | Accidents caused by the carrier | Verified per carrier, per load |
| Carrier cargo insurance | The motor carrier | Loss or damage to the freight in transit | Verified per carrier, per load |
| Shipper's own cargo policy | The shipper | Often primary or excess depending on the shipper's policy | Shipper's responsibility — we will document the claim |
| Broker liability / contingent cargo | The freight arranger | Errors and omissions of the arranger | Not published — certificate not issued to the entity to date |
If your contract requires a certificate naming your company as certificate holder or additional insured, send that requirement with the quote. We will confirm in writing whether the carrier's certificate can be endorsed before you tender.
Value-added handling, priced before pickup
These are the published accessorial charges in our estimate model. They appear on the quote and the rate confirmation when selected — they are not discovered on the invoice.
| Service | Published rate | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Liftgate at pickup/delivery | $95 | Quoted on the rate confirmation when selected; not added after pickup. |
| Residential / limited access | $110 | Quoted on the rate confirmation when selected; not added after pickup. |
| Appointment window | $45 | Quoted on the rate confirmation when selected; not added after pickup. |
| Inside delivery | $65 | Quoted on the rate confirmation when selected; not added after pickup. |
| Hazmat handling | $150 | Quoted on the rate confirmation when selected; not added after pickup. |
| Temperature controlled | $125 | Quoted on the rate confirmation when selected; not added after pickup. |
| Flatbed / rigging | $175 | Quoted on the rate confirmation when selected; not added after pickup. |
Accessorial rates are the published planning rates and can move with the carrier and market; the rate confirmation is the binding number. Drop-trailer, cross-dock and heavy-haul handling are quoted per lane rather than from this table.
Get the certificate
Ask for the current Portlandia Logistics insurance certificate, or the certificate for a specific carrier on your load. Dispatch answers in writing.
(502) 385-3399Claims, if something goes wrong
Report the loss within 48 hours with photos, the signed delivery receipt and the packing list. We open the carrier claim, provide the load record and rate confirmation, and follow it to a disposition.
Nothing on this page changes the terms of the rate confirmation or the carrier agreement.
Price the handling with the lane
Liftgate, inside delivery, appointment windows and temperature control are quoted up front, and the rate confirmation carries the same lines.
